Bringing home a dog for the first time is life-changing. For me, Will Corrente, it all began back in 2002 when I walked into Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League and met a scared little puppy pressed against the cold wall of her kennel. She was a purebred Black Labrador Retriever with the name “Angel” written on her tag. At the time, I didn’t know this pup would change my life forever.

My First Encounter with Coco

Angel was timid and afraid when I first saw her. But the moment we stepped outside and she placed her head gently on my leg, I knew I was hers. That moment sparked a journey that led me to become not only a dog lover but also the founder of K9 Vitatherapy, a wellness-focused brand dedicated to helping dogs live longer, healthier lives.

As someone who spends his days at VIP – Very Important Paws, a luxury dog resort in West Palm Beach, FL, dogs are a big part of my life. But Angel—who I later renamed Coco—was my very first. A 6-month-old Black Lab Retriever, she quickly proved how misleading shelter labels can be. Despite being described as untrained and destructive, she never had an accident in the house. Her only real “issue” was a fondness for rummaging through the trash when left alone.

Life with a Black Labrador Retriever

The early days were full of learning experiences. Raising a puppy requires time, patience, and consistency. Coco thrived because we built trust and communicated well. Like many Black Lab Retrievers, she was eager to please and extremely intelligent. She learned commands quickly and was soon walking off-leash comfortably.

The breed is known for its loyalty, energy, and affection. Coco was no exception. Her friendly personality made her a favorite among family, friends, clients, and even local business owners. Everywhere she went, she made people smile.

The Personality of a Black Lab Retriever

If you’re considering bringing home a Black Lab Retriever, be ready for a bundle of energy. They need daily exercise, mental stimulation, and social interaction. Without it, they can become bored or mischievous. Thankfully, their trainability makes managing their energy much easier.

They are also known for their emotional intelligence. Coco always seemed to know how I was feeling and often acted as my silent support system. Whether I was stressed or happy, she mirrored my emotions in her own quiet, comforting way.

Why Nutrition Became My Mission

Coco gave me 15 incredible years. Her passing left a huge void in my heart but also ignited a new passion. I began questioning how I could have extended her life and improved her overall wellness. That’s when I turned to my background in fitness and supplementation. If vitamins and proper nutrition work for humans, why not for dogs?

That realization led to the creation of K9 Vitatherapy. I committed myself to researching dog health, diet, and supplementation. Over the past few years, I’ve created a growing library of helpful content and products focused on giving dogs a better quality of life and longer lifespans.

The Diet Difference

One unique thing about dogs is that we fully control what they eat. That’s a massive responsibility. We decide their food quality, portion sizes, and nutrition levels. When you own a Black Labrador Retriever, you quickly learn that their love for food can lead to weight issues if you’re not careful. Balanced meals and supplements can make a significant difference in energy, coat quality, and overall health.

Saying Goodbye and Finding Grace

About six months after Coco passed, I visited Big Dog Ranch Rescue. I went there hoping to adopt another Black Labrador Retriever, but all the puppies had already been adopted. Instead, I met Grace, a 6-year-old Shetland Sheepdog mix. She had that same calm, sweet presence as Coco. It was like a divine sign. Within a day, I knew I had found another incredible companion.

Grace reminded me that good dogs don’t always come in the package you expect. Still, my love and respect for the Black Labrador Retriever breed will always remain special because of Coco.

Is a Black Labrador Retriever Right for You?

These dogs are active, smart, and deeply loyal. They need your time, attention, and love. If you’re willing to provide that, you’ll gain a best friend for life. Just like Coco was for me.

Whether you’re rescuing or buying, be sure you’re ready for the commitment. A Black Labrador Retriever will become a part of your daily life, your routine, and your heart.

Final Thoughts

Owning a Black Labrador Retriever was the best decision I ever made. The journey wasn’t perfect, but the rewards were endless. Coco taught me patience, loyalty, and unconditional love. Her legacy continues through K9 Vitatherapy, where I now focus on helping other dogs live longer, healthier lives.
