What is Kelp?

Kelp is a kind of seaweed found deep underwater. Packed with vitamins, natural salts, minerals, and iodine, kelp is a favorite of dogs. This may be because of its strong odor which seems to attract dogs.  And while Kelp can be very benificial for your dog, there are some cautions.  Because kelp contains a lot of iodine, it’s important to not give your dog too much.   Thyroid problems are typically associated with an iodine deficiency, in humans Kelp has been used to as a supplemental treatment for iodine deficiency.  Hypothyroidism can be caused by too much iodine.  Here are some symptoms of iodine toxicity in dogs: watery eyes and nose, weakness/lethargy, diarrhea, upset stomach and hypothyroidism (changes in coat, mental dullness & obesity).

With the precautions out of the way, let’s talk about the benefits.  There are many great benefits of adding kelp to your dog’s diet:

  1. Protein– Kelp is 25% protein. It’s also a great source of amino acids. These build and repair your dog’s muscles and body tissues.  Proteins also promotes new skin and hair growth.
  2. Iodine– Iodine stimulates a healthy thyroid gland which maintains your dog’s metabolism.
  3. Tartar Control– Raw kelp can prevent tartar and plaque build up on your dog’s teeth.
  4. Fiber– Kelp is high in fiber which improves your dog’s digestive tract keeping her regular.
  5. Low Fat– Kelp is only 2% fat which is great for dogs who need a low fat diet
  6. Skin Conditions– Kelp reduces itching and inflammation.
  7. Glandular Health– Kelp regulates activitiy in the adrenal, pituitary and thyroid glands.

Where the kelp you feed your dog comes from is of paramount importance, always choose deep sea kelp which has less contaminants and pollutants.    Kelp is one of those suplements whose benefits far outweigh the risks but rather than taking a chance on potential overdosing using a kelp only supplement, choose a high quality superfood supplement in which deep sea Kelp is and ingredient.
